A certified genuine example of the VOC Netherlands East Indies Duit — popularly known as the “New York Penny” — authenticated by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) as Genuine, cert 8161810-178. These small copper duiten were struck by the Dutch East India Company (VOC — Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie) for circulation in the Dutch East Indies, but large quantities found their way to New Amsterdam (present-day New York) during the Dutch colonial period, where they circulated as small change alongside other colonial coinage. Their widespread use in early New York gave rise to the collector nickname “New York Penny.”

An NGC “Genuine” designation confirms the coin is authentic but indicates the presence of surface issues or problems that preclude a numeric grade — typical for heavily circulated or environmentally affected colonial copper of this age and type. A compelling piece of Dutch colonial and early American numismatic history, over 300 years old.
