A heavily circulated example of the 1954 Bank of Canada Twenty Dollar note — the famous Devil's Face variety — and a desirable Changeover Note — certified and graded Fine 15 by Banknote Certification Service (BCS) with the coveted BCS Guarantee. Catalogue reference BC-33b, bearing the signatures of J.R. Beattie (Deputy Governor) and J.E. Coyne (Governor), serial number E/E 2310503. BCS notes Changeover as a comment.
This note combines two of the most sought-after varieties in Canadian paper money collecting: the iconic Devil's Face portrait variety and the transitional Changeover designation. Changeover notes are printed at the transition point between two signature combinations, making them scarcer than standard issues and highly prized by specialists. Dated Ottawa, 1954, the obverse features the iconic portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by artist Yousuf Karsh, in which the highlights of her hair behind the ear were perceived by many to resemble a demonic face — giving rise to the legendary Devil's Face nickname. The Bank of Canada subsequently modified the portrait, making the original Devil's Face notes a highly sought-after variety among Canadian paper money collectors. The reverse displays the celebrated Laurentian winter landscape featuring snow-covered spruce trees beneath a dramatic cloudy sky, rendered in rich olive-green tones. Printed by the Canadian Bank Note Company, Limited.
