A circulated example of the 1954 Bank of Canada Two Dollar note — the famous Devil's Face variety — certified and graded Very Fine 30 by Banknote Certification Service (BCS) with the coveted BCS Guarantee. Catalogue reference BC-30a, bearing the signatures of J.E. Coyne (Deputy Governor) and G.F. Towers (Governor), prefix B/B, serial number B/B9825683. BCS notes Stains as a comment.
Dated Ottawa, 1954, the obverse features the iconic portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by artist Yousuf Karsh, in which the highlights of her hair behind the ear were perceived by many to resemble a demonic face — giving rise to the legendary Devil's Face nickname. The Bank of Canada subsequently modified the portrait, making the original Devil's Face notes a highly sought-after variety among Canadian paper money collectors. The reverse displays a stunning rural landscape scene featuring a peaceful Canadian countryside with rolling hills, a church steeple, and a lone tree — one of the most beloved reverse designs in Canadian numismatic history. Printed by the British American Bank Note Company, Limited.
