Design & Historical Significance
The obverse features the right-facing portrait of King George VI by T.H. Paget. The 1950 issue marks a notable change in the obverse legend: following India’s independence in 1947 and the transition to a republic in 1950, the title ET IND:IMP (Emperor of India) was removed, leaving the simplified inscription GEORGIVS VI DEI GRATIA REX. This makes the 1950 Canadian five cent the first year of the new legend — a meaningful numismatic milestone for collectors of Canadian coinage.
The reverse continues the beloved Beaver design by Emanuel Hahn, depicting a proud beaver perched on a log, with “5 CENTS” above and “CANADA 1950” below.
Why This Coin Belongs in Your Collection
Imagine holding a coin that quietly marks the end of an empire — the first Canadian five cent struck without the Emperor of India title, preserved in choice uncirculated condition with its full nickel brilliance intact. At MS-63, this 1950 five cent offers exceptional eye appeal and historical depth, making it a compelling addition to any date set of Canadian nickels or a collection focused on significant transitional issues.
