Design & Historical Significance
The obverse features the right-facing portrait of King George VI by T.H. Paget, inscribed GEORGIVS VI D:G: REX ET IND:IMP. The reverse showcases the celebrated "V for Victory" design — a bold "V" surmounted by a flaming torch, flanked by maple leaf sprigs and the date 1944, with "CANADA" arching above and "CENTS" below. This patriotic design was introduced in 1943 as Canada’s wartime tribute, replacing the traditional beaver reverse for the duration of the conflict. The 12-sided shape was also introduced at this time to distinguish the nickel from the silver dime in circulation.
Why This Coin Belongs in Your Collection
Imagine holding a coin struck at the Ottawa Mint during the pivotal final years of the Second World War, preserved in gem uncirculated condition with every detail of its bold Victory design razor-sharp and brilliant. MS-65 examples of the 1944 Victory Nickel are genuinely scarce — most surviving specimens show the contact marks and softness typical of lower Mint State grades. This ICCS-certified gem represents the finest tier of what collectors can realistically acquire, offering both historical resonance and outstanding numismatic quality.
Encapsulated in an original ICCS sealed holder. Tampering with the holder invalidates the certification opinion. Have holder replaced if inner package/seal is not intact.
