An extraordinary example of the 1937 Bank of Canada One Thousand Dollar note, certified and graded Very Choice New 64 by Legacy Currency Grading (Cert #80980068). Catalogue reference BC-28, bearing the signatures of J.A.C. Osborne (Deputy Governor) and G.F. Towers (Governor), with the spectacular serial number AK 0000068 — an exceptionally low serial number of just 68. Plate 1/1.

The 1937 Bank of Canada $1,000 note is one of the rarest and most coveted issues in all of Canadian paper money collecting. With only a small number of examples known to exist in collector hands — the vast majority having been redeemed and destroyed by the Bank of Canada — any example in high grade is a significant find. This note combines three exceptional attributes: a near-gem Very Choice New 64 grade, a low serial number of 68 (among the earliest notes printed in the AK prefix), and Plate 1/1 — the very first plate used to print this denomination. Together, these features make this one of the most desirable examples of this issue that could be offered.

The obverse features a distinguished portrait of Sir Wilfrid Laurier — Canada’s seventh Prime Minister and the first French-Canadian to hold that office — at centre within an oval vignette, flanked by red serial numbers on a rich pink and black ground. The reverse displays one of the most magnificent designs in Canadian numismatic history — an allegorical scene featuring a seated female figure representing Canada, accompanied by a cherub, holding a shield and torch, surrounded by elaborate lathe-work in deep crimson tones. Printed by the Canadian Bank Note Company, Limited.
