A boldly detailed example of the 1913-S Buffalo Nickel — Type 2 — certified and graded Extra Fine 40 by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS), cert 3923.40/49647586. The Type 2 reverse, introduced mid-1913, features the bison standing on a flat ground line with the denomination FIVE CENTS recessed into the ground — a design change made to improve the coin's durability. The 1913-S Type 2 is a semi-key date in the Buffalo Nickel series, struck at the San Francisco Mint in limited numbers.
The obverse features the Native American portrait by James Earle Fraser, a composite of several Native American chiefs, surrounded by the inscriptions LIBERTY and the date 1913, with the S mintmark below. The reverse displays the iconic American Bison (modelled after Black Diamond of the Central Park Zoo) standing on a flat ground line, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above and FIVE CENTS below. Struck in .750 copper / .250 nickel at the San Francisco Mint.
