Design: The Indian Head Cent by James B. Longacre

The Indian Head Cent was designed by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver James Barton Longacre and struck from 1859 through 1909. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a Native American war bonnet — inscribed UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounding and the date below. Despite the popular name, the figure is Liberty, not a Native American — though the design has been associated with a famous legend that Longacre modelled it from a Native American chief’s headdress that his daughter tried on at his studio.

The reverse displays the denomination ONE CENT within a laurel wreath, surmounted by a federal shield — the “shield reverse” introduced in 1864 and used through the end of the series in 1909. The design was replaced by the Lincoln cent in 1909 on the centennial of Abraham Lincoln’s birth, making the 1909 Philadelphia Indian Head cent the final issue of the series.
