A choice extra fine example of the 1896 Newfoundland Fifty Cents — Large W variety — certified and graded Extremely Fine 45 by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) under the NFLD designation, cert 33236.45/4803726, in an early PCGS green label rattler holder. The Large W variety refers to the size of the letter W in NEWFOUNDLAND on the obverse legend — a die variety that is significantly scarcer than the common Small W type for this date. Variety specialists actively seek the Large W for their collections, and examples in XF grades are genuinely difficult to locate. The handwritten notation on the slab confirms the Large W attribution.
Struck by the Colony of Newfoundland — which did not join Canadian Confederation until 1949 — the 1896 fifty cent piece is a popular Victorian pre-Confederation issue. At XF 45, this coin shows light even wear on the high points with all major design elements sharp and well-defined, retaining considerable original detail.
The obverse features the right-facing portrait of Queen Victoria (laureate/draped bust) surrounded by the legend VICTORIA DEI GRATIA REGINA / NEWFOUNDLAND. The reverse displays the denomination 50 CENTS and the date 1896 within an ornate floral wreath. Struck in .925 fine silver.
