5 Cent Coin

After the decommissioning of the penny in 2012, the five cent coin is now in the bottom position as the lowest denomination in Canada and is still in use today. There have been many changes in the striking of the five cent coin since its inception in 1858. It started out as a silver coin (sterling until 1919 and 80% for 1920-21). It was changed to pure nickel in 1922 and other compositions later in it's evolution. The obverse has always depicted an image of the monarch but the reverse has seen many changes.
