REFERENCE GUIDES: Grading & Quality Of Ancient Coins: Coin Grades

VERY GOOD (VG)

An ancient coin is worn to VG when the minor details are largely gone, and many major details are worn through and only visible around the edges of the design. The portrait will be flat on top, but the eye, mouth, and hair around the edges will still be at least partly defined. You should still be able to read most of any inscriptions present when the coin was struck.

VG

This obverse is a typical VG. The minor details are worn away over much of the coin (just visible in a few recessed areas), and the major details are also very well worn with much of the portrait fairly flat, with the ear almost completely gone. The line separating the cheek and neck is almost gone. About 1/2 of the eye socket is still visible, as are the mouth and hair at the lowest points, providing some details. The portrait's outline is intact and clearly recognizable, and the inscriptions are still legible. The reverse at first glance looks to be a slightly higher grade (aF), but note how the inscription is in part worn away at the top, leaving the overall aspect of a VG.

Once a coin has worn to the grade of VG or lower, the adjectives of "about" and "good" are not normally used.
