REFERENCE GUIDES: Grading & Quality Of Ancient Coins: Coin Grades

EXTRA FINE

XF for EXTRA FINE OR EF for EXTREMELY FINE
(the two initials are interchangeable)

A sharp coin with all minor details clear, but traces of wear (either on the coin or from the die) at the very highest points. An upper-end XF (or gXF) coin appears mint state at a glance, but a closer examination will show small areas of wear. A lower-end XF (or aXF) will have easily visible wear but no minor details will be worn completely through.

This coin grades gXF although the obverse could be graded "Near Mint State". On the enlargement one can see a slight weakness (probably due to too low a die pressure) on the laurel leaf just to the left of the eye. Of more significance is the weakness in the eagle's breast feathers, which are not actual wear, but still reduce the grade to gXF".
