John H. Glenn Jr. rode the first Atlas rocket into orbital flight, becoming the first American to orbit the earth. Glenn completed three orbits in 4 hours, 55 minutes and 23 seconds of flight. Mercury-Atlas 6 was also known as Friendship 7.
